Wie lässt sich die Mitte der Gesellschaft in einer Stadt mitten in Deutschland am besten beschreiben?
Nicht mit dem Wunsch nach Singularität, sondern mit dem nach Bodenständigkeit, so argumentiert Barbara Thériault. Wenn manche die Bodenständigkeit als negativ betrachten, ist sie hier – aus Sicht der Protagonisten – weitestgehend positiv zu verstehen, als Ausdruck eines typischen Selbstbewusstseins der Mitte.
Mit ihren „soziologischen Feuilletons“ – kurzweilig und im Stil der 1920er und 1930er Jahre verfasst – erkundet die Soziologin mit einer Mischung aus Empathie, Anteilnahme und Distanz den Alltag im heutigen Erfurt und Thüringen. Es geht dabei um karierte Hemden, kurze Haare, Tattoos, Trinken, Jugendweihe, heimliches Heiraten – Themen, die den Alltag mitunter exotischer als ferne Länder erscheinen lassen und bei denen die Leser*innen sich oft ertappt fühlen. Und weil die Mitte sich manchmal vom Rand besser betrachten lässt, führten die Recherchen die Autorin auch an Orte wie Bars, Saunen oder Seen, an denen ihre Protagonisten sonst nicht zu verkehren pflegen

Non pas une quête de singularité, avance ici Barbara Thériault, mais bien la Bodenständigkeit, terme intraduisible renvoyant à un ethos de la mesure : ni trop, ni pas assez. Cette Bodenständigkeit n’a pas pour les protagonistes de ce livre la connotation négative qu’elle a souvent à l’oreille allemande ; au contraire : elle exprime plutôt une certaine attitude confiante typique.
Pleinement consciente de l’importance de comprendre les marges pour saisir le centre, Barbara Thériault s’attarde aux « lieux d’asile » – bars, saunas, plages – et explore des espaces que ses protagonistes se gardent bien de fréquenter.

Explorations about the sober middle of society
What is the best way to describe the middle of society in a city in the middle of Germany? Not with the desire for singularity, but with the desire for down-to-earthness, argues Barbara Thériault.
If some see down-to-earthness as negative, here - from the protagonists' point of view - it is to be understood as largely positive, as an expression of a typical self-confidence of the middle. With her sociological feuilletons - entertaining and written in the style of the 1920s and 1930s - the sociologist explores everyday life in today's Erfurt and Thuringia with a mixture of empathy, sympathy and distance. The topics covered include checkered shirts, short hair, tattoos, drinking, youth consecration, secret marriages - topics that sometimes make everyday life seem more exotic than faraway countries and which often make readers feel they have been caught out. And because the middle can sometimes be better viewed from the edge, the research also took the author to places such as bars, saunas or lakes, where her protagonists are not in the habit of frequenting.
